Introduction
Founded in 2024, the Film and Video Production (FVP) program at Astoria High School is a part of the Career & Technical Education (CTE) Business & Marketing Program of Study within Astoria School District 1 located in Astoria, Oregon. The program adheres to common educational standards designed to promote lifelong artistic and technical literacy and fluency and is guided by the mission and vision statements that follow.
Overview/Philosophy
The arts enrich our lives with profound meaning and contribute valuable creative and intellectual capital. They spark creativity, foster critical thinking, and encourage the integration of diverse perspectives. A thoughtfully designed CTE program that combines science and art enhances self-awareness, boosts self-esteem, strengthens self-management, and helps students develop collaboration and relationship skills. It also supports responsible decision-making, preparing students for success in both their personal and professional lives.
Mission
Through the lens of narrative filmmaking and promotional video media, the Film & Video Production program at AHS seeks to inspire and equip students with the creative and critical thinking skills, social-emotional skills, and intellectual and expressive abilities they need to thrive as engaged, impactful members of a global society.
Vision
Students engaged in the program will have equitable access to a high-quality career and technical education that fosters technical and artistic literacy, empowering them to develop fluency across a wide range of career disciplines.
This education will serve as a foundation for:
- Expressing and bringing creative ideas to life while mastering essential technical skills and cognitive abilities that are crucial to success in the 21st century.
- Engaging with ideas and artistic work in a way that is personally meaningful, recognizing the visual arts’ ability to explore universal themes for both commercial and artistic purposes.
- Creating innovative commercial and artistic work that reflects diverse cultural perspectives.
- Connecting with and evaluating how the arts communicate meaning across all disciplines, enriching both local communities and global society.
Theory
The development of commercial and artistic literacy relies on creating an environment where students are encouraged to imagine, investigate, create, and reflect both independently and collaboratively. Visual arts communicate ideas, connect with culture and history, and promote well-being, serving as a tool for addressing universal, global challenges.
Learning experiences that engage students with diverse artistic media, symbols, and metaphors to express and communicate their ideas are essential. To prepare commercially and artistically literate individuals, students must have opportunities to analyze and interpret the work of others, deepening their understanding of both commercial and creative arts.
