Film & Video Production I

  • Available to Students in Grade 11 and 12
  • Students in earlier grades considered by staff recommendation and instructor approval
  • Prerequisite coursework in music, art, theatre and/or business is required (see instructor for approval)

The program’s initial course introduce students to film and video from both a theoretical, artistic discipline, as well as a production discipline. No prior experience required. Students are introduced to:

  • Thematic storytelling
  • Visual rhetoric
  • Criticism and analysis as an evaluative art
  • Sound and lighting theory and concepts
  • Directing philosophies
  • Socio-historical issues in filmmaking
  • Filmmaking as a craft and business

In addition to developing a strong academic foundation, Students will also engage in all phases of video production on a variety of creative projects such as music videos, Public Service Announcements (PSAs), commercial promos, mashups, movie trailers, and fictional narratives. Students will learn about and then exercise skills in:

  • Planning and project management (leveraging Milanote software for planning and storyboarding)
  • Filming (including operation of HD video cameras, professional microphones, sound recording equipment, and lighting)
  • Editing (using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects)

Opportunities will be provided for students to work as crew members, both behind and in front of the camera.

Film & Video Production II

  • Available to Students in Grade 11 and 12
  • Film & Video Production I is a prerequisite for the second section of this course

The second section of the program leverages students’ previous experience in Section I of the course to build projects immediately beginning at the start of the second semester. Students in this second section will also be responsible for working with Astoria High School student life and athletics programs to produce promotional materials on behalf of Astoria High School. This may also include promotional materials for Astoria School District 1. Students in this second section of the course will have significant freedom to design additional projects that meet their creative goals, with instructor approval and assistance. This course includes significant commitment to time out of class, in addition to instructor-led lunch-and-learn sessions and pre/post-school project reviews.
